Viavi (Viavi Solutions) activity began in 1979, when Uniphase began in a garage in San Jose, California, as a laser manufacturer for chip and scanner manufacturers. Through mergers and acquisitions, the company eventually became known as JDS Uniphase, or simply JDSU.
Viavi manufactures network monitoring and testing equipment. It also develops optical technology used for a variety of applications including materials quality control, anti-counterfeiting currency and 3D motion detection, including Microsoft's Kinect video game controller.
